This is how to wear neon without looking like a highlighter

Forget Millennial Pink, Gen Z Yellow and Living Coral – the latest colour trend to take over is a rather shocking but unforgettable shade of neon yellow. You may have thought that the neon trend was left in the ‘80s, but we’re calling it now, 2019 is the year neon becomes the new black.

The likes of Kim K, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, Bella Hadid, Ashley Graham and Jordyn Woods have all been spotted rocking the trend; and a quick search for ‘neon’ on ASOS provided no less than 491 results. Search #neon on Instagram and you’’ come across over 10.2 million posts. Yep, this is a bonafide trend. But for the uninitiated, we’ll admit it can be a pretty terrifying trend to get on board with, so in the interests of not looking like a walking highlighter, we’ve put together a handy guide on pulling off the trend like a pro.

Wear a pop of neon

For an entry-level nod to the trend, try layering a neon roll neck jumper or T-shirt under a black blazer or slip dress for a subtle splash of the colour, rather than an all-out outfit.

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize

If you’re not quite ready for the full neon experience, try out some fluoro accessories instead to take your wardrobe basics from 1 -100, instantly. There are some seriously great neon shoes, bags, hair accessories and sunglasses out there and we’re extremely tempted to buy one of each.

Opt for a different shade of neon

Fluoro yellow and green may be the colours du jour, but if such a bright neon isn’t your jam then opt for a slightly softer shade like pink or coral, like Kim K wearing that dress last summer.

Pair it with white

Yes, neon looks great with black, but it also happens to look equally great with white, and with summer (hopefully) just around the corner, we’re ditching black in favour of white.

Save it for holiday

Just as Kylie and Jordyn proved on holiday – before their friendship bit the dust – neon looks great with a tan. If you’re lucky enough to be jetting off on holiday (room for one more?), swap your regular swimwear in favour of neon bikinis and one-pieces for a totally tropical poolside vibe. Your holiday Instas are about to be lit.

Inject some neon into your make-up bag

One of the easiest ways to dip your toe into the trend in a cheap and commitment-free way is by adding a splash of neon to your beauty routine. Opt for a neon paint job for your next mani – China Glaze Neon Pink Voltage and Orly Glow Stick are great true neon colours – or, if you’re feeling super brave try out a slick of neon eyeliner paired with graphic black lashes.

Suit up

For those wanting to make a statement (as if neon wasn’t enough of a statement) then a neon suit is the only way to go. Make like Instagram influencer Lissy Roddy and pair a fluoro two-piece with a simple white T-shirt and chunky dad trainers for the ultimate cool-girl lewk. Plus, you can wear the trousers and blazer separately, so you’re basically getting three outfits for the price of one.

Wear it with animal print

It might sound like too much, but trust us neon and snake print are a match made in heaven. This combo is not for the faint-hearted mind you, but if you’ve got the courage to pull it off we predict you could be getting street-style snapped.
