We love experimenting with our hair, and we like to think we’re pretty adventurous, so when we discovered this year’s hottest hair trend we knew we had to get involved. Turns out this year’s ‘it’ colour is a pretty unlikely one, yep grey is officially the new blonde thanks to a slew of models, celebs and influencers like Iskra Lawrence, Billie Eilish, InTheFrow and more. If, like us, you want in on the trend but don’t want to splash out on a total colour overhaul at the hairdressers, we’ve got everything you need to try the trend for under £10.
The grey hair trend has been doing the rounds in various forms since around 2010 when Lady Gaga sported a chic grey updo, but 2019 is set to be the year when the trend really takes off. Pinterest reported that searches for ‘going gray’ have increased by a whopping 879% this year alone, while searches for ‘lilac hair’ have increased by 1077%. A quick search on Pinterest for ‘grey hair’ throws up some major hair inspo and is seriously making us want to reach for the bottle of dye immediately.
In order to get the perfect clean, cool-toned grey you will need to pre-lighten the hair – so if you have naturally dark hair this will be much harder – but once you have the perfect lightened base you’re ready to add the grey. Budget brands like L’Oreal and Lime Crime have flooded the high street with plenty of budget hair dyes recently in a whole host of permanent, semi-permanent, tints and wash out options to suit every commitment level. The best part? Most of the dyes are all under £10. Granny-chic has never looked so good.
